Green Tea and Breast Cancer Prevention:  What the Experts Say

Green tea is the most popular tea in China and Japan, where the lowest breast cancer rates are found. There are many health-promoting properties to green tea, and thousands of published studies verifying its benefits. Tea is generally high in antioxidants, but green is highest. Green tea is the least processed of all teas (green tea leaves are simply steamed). Oolong tea has some antioxidant effect, but lower levels than green tea, and black tea has the lowest levels of the three.

A local business, Javernick Farms, offers organic produce – twenty-two weeks out of the year. The Javernicks operate a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Each week towards the end of May through the 3rd week in October, share-holders (members) receive a wide variety of produce (lettuce, spinach, beets carrots, chard – the list goes on!). The cost of becoming a member is very reasonable! So, let’s support the Javernicks in their efforts to bring fresh organic healthy food the people of Fremont County.

Donia reported on the status of the bylaws. They have been reviewed by an attorney and are now ready to submit our paperwork.

Donia reported that the co-op currently has 32 member households.  Another new member household joined this month.

Vanessa Bearwald has been supplying people with fresh, natural and sometimes organic produce on a weekly basis. Her program is called Buy-A-Bag. She charges $15 and will deliver! If you are interested, please contact Vanessa at  vbear@mycidco.com.

Donia reported that Cindy handed out informational fliers about the c0-op at the Canon City Business Owner’s Meet-n-Greet event last weekend.

There was a discussion about having a theme for our monthly meetings, especially in regard to food items. For instance, at this meeting we all brought snacks. At the next meeting we will choose a theme or country and bring ethnic food associated with that.

Donia has seed and sundry catalogs available for member to peruse. If anyone wants to order from them, let her know.

The feasibility of a community garden was discussed. The members present suggested that when harvest time arrives we should bring extra produce to the monthly meetings to swap and trade.  We also discussed the possibility of setting up a general location to swap and trade more often.

Seed Exchange: A huge basket of seeds packets were placed  in the middle of the living room floor. We all sat around exchanging seeds and getting excited about our gardens.

Next meeting: March 8th 2009 (3 pm) at Mike Moser and Phyllis Swenson’s Alpaca Ranch. We will tour the ranch and then have our meeting. Theme for the potluck is Spring Time in the Andes (the native land of Alpacas).
